Cubs’ Héctor Neris describes his calm mentality in tense situations
It might be nerve-racking watching at home, but Héctor Neris insists it’s under control.
That’s what 11 seasons in the big leagues and pitching on the biggest stages will do for you.
“Life in baseball,” Neris said after the Cubs’ 7-6 win over the White Sox on Friday night. “Experiencing bad times makes you smart. The bad times in the past make you like that.
“If this situation happened before and you don’t die, why now? You want that feeling, control the emotions. It’s the only thing you can do and try to be focused and follow your strength.”
When the White Sox led the 9th inning with a hit and a bunt single to put the go-ahead run on 1st base, Neris showed no panic. His strong mentality and affirmation allowed him to do that.
“Just a good piece of hitting on a single and they laid down a pretty nice bunt,” manager Craig Counsell said. “Héctor bore down and I thought he made some really good pitchers after that.”
His approach was simple — trust yourself.
“Every situation you have a little second to go back and be in the present and say ‘If I did it before, I can do it now again. I’m the best. Nobody better than me in this situation,’” Neris said. “This is what you have to believe for [the] win.”

And it worked.
Neris picked up a pair of flyball outs, walked Andrew Benintendi after a tough at-bat to load the bases and then induced a flyball from Andrew Vaughn to escape the jam.
“After the third out, feeling good,” Neris said calmly after the game while rocking a pair of white sunglasses.
The 35-year-old has been a solid closer for Craig Counsell and the Cubs — Friday was his 16th save of the year. And while they haven’t all been pretty, that stability has been a welcome for the Cubs who have dealt with injuries to their bullpen throughout the year.
“A lot of people got hurt, people in good moments get hurt and this affected a little bit the team, but we’re never down,” Neris said. “We never said, ‘We’re over.’ We stay positive. We stay in one life and win and believe and trust the people and just wait for the good moment.
“It can be now, it can start now.”
