Cubs featured prominently on updated Top 100 prospect lists
The Cubs’ deep farm system was recognized once again on Wednesday.
Both ESPN and MLB Pipeline released updated, mid-season Top 100 prospect lists and the Cubs were heavily featured while differing in their opinions on Cubs prospects.
ESPN featured 6 Cubs on their Top 100 list: C Moisés Ballesteros (37), OF Kevin Alcántara (60), OF Owen Caissie (63), INF Matt Shaw (74), RHP Cade Horton (95) and INF Jefferson Rojas (99).
Pipeline had 6 Cubs, too — Shaw (25), Horton (31), Caissie (36), Ballesteros (44), INF James Triantos (60) and Alcántara (74).

The biggest surprise on ESPN’s list was Horton’s steep drop. At the beginning of the year, he was 30th on ESPN’s Top 100 prospects. Part of the reason for his fall had to do with an injury that will cause him to likely miss the rest of the season.
Horton, 22, suffered a subscapular strain in May and then suffered a setback while playing catch during his rehab.
“Same injury, just had a setback,” Cubs GM Carter Hawkins told reporters Tuesday afternoon in Cleveland. “Feeling some pain in that area and at this point in the year – and this point in his career – not something that we wanted to push.
“We feel confident that he’ll be ready to rock and roll come Spring Training and certainly will be part of our plans for next year. It just felt like pushing for this year wasn’t the smartest thing for where he is.”
Ballesteros has been raking in the minors, earned a promotion to Triple-A and continues to hit. With the I-Cubs, the 20-year-old is slashing .283/.346/.490 with 7 home runs, 19 RBI and a 114 wRC+. That’s on the heels of a dominant 56-game stretch in Double-A where he hit .299/.372/.496 with 9 homers and a 152 wRC+.
Alcántara, Ballesteros, Caissie, Shaw and Triantos are all currently in Triple-A. Alcántara is the lone prospect on any of the lists to also be on the Cubs’ 40-man roster.
