Recapping all the action from Game 2 of our virtual season
Yu Darvish continued his strong run from the second half into the 2020 season
Well, the virtual 2020 season that is. Darvish turned in a strong performance on the bump as Marquee Sports Network continues our 2020 season simulation of MLB The Show 20.
Unfortunately for Darvish and the Cubs, Brewers starter Freddy Peralta was stronger as the Brewers took game two of the virtual season 2-0 at Miller Park. The Cubs fell to 1-1 on the virtual season.
Darvish pitched 5 innings, striking out 6 and allowing 4 hits and 4 walks. While the Cubs offense had a response for every rally in the virtual season opener, the Cubs’ bats didn’t have an answer for Peralta and the rest of the Brewers bullpen, mustering just four hits in the game, all coming from Kyle Schwarber and Darvish.
Peralta struck out 9 in 6.1 innings, allowing 4 hits and 3 walks.
The Brewers got on the board in the 3rd inning. Christian Yelich drew a 2-out walk and stole second base. Keston Hiura drove him in with a double down the left field line.
Schwarber hit a leadoff double in the 2nd inning and Willson Contreras walked to put runners on first and second with no outs. But Jason Heyward struck out and Ian Happ grounded into an inning-ending double play.
In the 6th, the Brewers loaded the bases with no outs, but Alec Mills limited the damage. Mills got Eric Sogard to ground into a double play that scored Hiura. Mills struck out Justin Smoak to end the inning.
Schwarber double again in the 4th inning, this time with one out, but Peralta struck out Contreras and Heyward to kill the threat.
The Cubs’ top of the order continues its early struggles. Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo are 1-for-14 in the first two games. Bryant has a double and 2 walks and Rizzo has 2 walks in the season.
