Cubs’ Dansby Swanson gave his mom a memorable birthday gift during the game

2 weeks agoAndy Martinez

Nancy Swanson had some pretty epic, front row seats behind the Cubs dugout for her birthday at the Cubs-Pirates game Tuesday night in Pittsburgh.

Then, her son, Dansby, delivered an extravagant present — a 2-run home run in the 4th inning that extended the Cubs lead as they beat the Pirates 9-5. The Cubs have taken the series in Pittsburgh and move above .500 (67-66) for the first time since May 28.

And after, celebrating with his teammates in the dugout, Dansby ran up the top steps of the dugout, waved to his mom and wished her a happy birthday.

A pretty special gift, indeed.

Swanson’s long ball was the cherry on top of a 5-run inning for the Cubs against the Pirates. Seiya Suzuki hit a 2-run home run in the frame to tie the game. Three hitters later, Nico Hoerner had an RBI double that gave the Cubs the lead. That set the stage for Swanson’s 421-foot opposite field blast.

It’s Swanson’s second straight day with a home run — he hit a grand slam in the Cubs’ 8-run 6th inning in Monday night’s 18-8 win.

The Cubs thrived on Jared Jones in the frame — his second time through the lineup. They batted around and chased him after the inning, turning it over to the Pirates bullpen that had to cover 5 innings on Monday.

The Cubs followed up their 5-run 4th with 4 runs in the 5th. Swanson and Pete Crow-Armstrong had bases loaded walks and Miguel Amaya delivered a 2-run single. He had another 2-hit game and has been red-hot of late.
