Cubs’ Cody Bellinger lands on IL, slugging prospect called up at crucial point for offense
The Cubs offense looked to be hitting their stride.
A speed bump — in the form of injury — will test their resolve.
Cody Bellinger, one of their most consistent and potent threats offensively, was placed on the 10-day IL with a left middle finger fracture. He suffered the injury on Wednesday night in Baltimore when he was hit on the hand by a pitch from Orioles reliever Cionel Pérez.
The Cubs recalled outfielder Alexander Canario from Triple-A Iowa to take his place on the active roster.
The injury comes at a crucial point for the Cubs — they’ve won 5 of their last 6 contests, won back-to-back series for the first time since mid-April and have crawled to within 3.5 games of the final NL Wild Card spot just a few days before the All-Star break.
The Cubs are hitting .259 as a team in July, the 9th-best mark in baseball and are hitting .303 with runners in scoring position, which ranks 8th in the big leagues. The Cubs hit .215 with runners in scoring position (3rd-worst) and .228 overall (6th-worst) before the calendar flipped to July.
Bellinger has been a key force in the Cubs’ lineup — he’s slashing .269/.331/.410 with 9 home runs, 39 RBI and a 109 wRC+ this season. Part of the reason the Cubs wanted to bring him back this offseason was because of the threat he would provide in the heart of the order.
Now, that will fall onto the rest of the Cubs lineup. Michael Busch (138 wRC+), Ian Happ (129 wRC+) and Seiya Suzuki (122 wRC+) will likely have to shoulder that load.
Bellinger’s versatility also was a boost to Craig Counsell. His ability to man center field, right field and first base allowed Counsell to deploy Bellinger wherever would maximize his lineup. The everyday outfield will now likely be Happ in left, Pete Crow-Armstrong in center and Suzuki in right, with Canario and Miles Mastrobuoni able to fill in if that trio needs a day off.
Canario, 24, has shown flashes of the player he could be in the majors. In 25 plate appearances this season, the righty is hitting .273 with a home run and a 134 wRC+.
In 59 games with Triple-A Iowa this season, Canario has 16 home runs, 43 RBI and a 109 wRC+. He’s hit 62 home runs in the minor leagues over his last 3 seasons (237 games).
