Cubs claim infielder Sergio Alcántara off waivers from Tigers
The Cubs added some depth to their infield by claiming Sergio Alcántara off waivers from the Tigers on Friday.
Alcántara, 24, debuted with the Tigers in 2020 and was 3-for-21 in 10 big league games with a triple, a home run and a RBI. Alcántara split his time at second and third base for Detroit.
Alcántara spent his winter with the Tigres del Licey in the Dominican Winter League, where he slashed .257/.346/.400 with 2 home runs and 8 RBI in 23 games playing shortstop. The Tigres designated Alcántara for assignment on January 29 to make room on their 40-man roster for catcher Wilson Ramos.
In 631 minor league games, Alcántara slashed .256/.340/.318 with 9 home runs and 187 RBI. The Tigers acquired Alcántara in 2017 in a four-player deal that sent J.D. Martinez to Arizona. The Cubs 40-man roster sits at 38 players.
