Cubs catcher Tomás Nido undergoes knee surgery

5 months agoAndy Martinez

CINCINNATI — The Cubs will be without their veteran backstop for an extended period.

Tomás Nido underwent surgery on his right meniscus, manager Craig Counsell said.

“Probably four to six weeks is kind of the timeline,” Counsell said prior to Wednesday’s series finale against the Reds.

Nido, 30, was signed in mid-June after the team designated Yan Gomes for assignment. He has started 15 games for the Cubs this season and is hitting .128/.143/.234 with a homer in 50 plate appearances.

The Cubs selected the contract of Christian Bethancourt last Friday when Nido was originally placed on the 10-day IL. He made his second start with the Cubs on Wednesday and had an RBI single.

Nido was brought in to try and provide a boost to the catching position. Gomes and Amaya had struggled at the plate and the Cubs decided to try and shake things up with Nido’s addition.

He served originally as Amaya’s backup, then started a few games in a row while Amaya worked to change from a leg kick in his swing to a slight toe tap. Amaya returned to the starting role and Nido and now Bethancourt behind him.

Cubs catchers have a 45 weighted runs created plus this season, the third-lowest mark in baseball this season.
