Cubs broadcaster Pat Hughes wins another award

21 hours agoAndy Martinez

Hall-of-fame broadcaster Pat Hughes added another award to his decorated mantle.

Hughes, the Cubs’ radio play-by-play announcer, was named the 2024 Illinois Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sports Media Association on Tuesday. In 2023, Hughes was named the Ford C. Frick Award recipient, which is presented annually by the National Baseball Hall of Fame to a broadcaster for “major contributions to baseball”.

It’s the 10th time that Hughes has won the Illinois Sportscaster of the Year and the 13th time in his career that he’s won a state Sportscaster of the Year — he won it three times in Wisconsin. Hughes last won the award in 2018.

Just last month, the Cubs and 670 The Score announced that they had reached multiyear extensions with Hughes and color commentator Ron Coomer. The 2025 season will mark the 12th season that the duo have worked together.

In 2022, Hughes was inducted into the Cubs Hall of Fame. Hughes became the third Cubs broadcaster to win the Ford C. Frick Award, joining Harry Caray and Jack Brickhouse.

Hughes became the Cubs’ radio play-by-play announcer in 1996 and has been on the call for the historic 1998 home run chase, Cubs playoff chases and the 2016 World Series title that broke the 108-year title drought for the North Siders. He began his career as the play-by-play TV announcer for the Minnesota Twins in 1983, before becoming the Brewers’ play-by-play radio broadcaster for 12 seasons.

This upcoming season will mark his 30th season in the radio booth for the Cubs.
