Cubs begin winter with series of roster moves
While the managerial swap was the big news of Monday, the Cubs had a slew of other, smaller roster moves.
The team selected infield prospect Luis Vázquez, adding the 24-year-old to the 40-man roster.
In other moves, pitcher Jeremiah Estrada was claimed by the Padres, Brendon Little was traded to the Blue Jays for cash and Jared Young was claimed by the Cardinals.
Nick Burdi also cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Iowa.
Vázquez was Rule 5 eligible this winter, which means another team could have swiped him away from the Cubs in the Rule 5 Draft next month.
He was originally selected by the Cubs in the 14th round of the 2017 MLB Draft and has climbed through the farm system in the years since.
In 124 games between Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa in 2023, Vázquez hit .271/.361/.456 (.817 OPS) with 20 homers, 80 RBI and 10 stolen bases. He is highly regarded for his glovework in the field, spending most of his time at shortstop but is also able to play second and third base.
Burdi, 30, appeared in 3 games as a reliever for the Cubs in 2023 before injuries cost him the last few months of the season.
Estrada, 25, has pitched in 7 games in the big leagues over the last 2 seasons, sporting a 5.51 ERA and 2.02 WHIP. Young got a cup of coffee in the majors in 2022 and then played in 16 games last year with a .720 OPS.
Little was the Cubs’ 1st-round pick in 2017 but the left-handed pitcher only made 1 appearance in the big leagues (which came in 2022).
The Cubs’ 40-man roster now stands at 37 players.
