Cubs added an intriguing prospect through MLB Rule 5 draft
DALLAS — The Cubs bolstered their infield depth on Wednesday afternoon.
The team took infielder Gage Workman from the Tigers Double-A roster during the 1st round of Wednesday’s Rule 5 draft. As a Rule 5 pick, Workman must spend the entire 2025 season at the big league level. He would have to be offered back to Detroit before being able to option him.

Workman is a left-handed hitting infielder who slashed .280/.366/.476 with a 140 weighted runs created plus at Double-A in 2024, 40 percentage points above league average. The 25-year-old hit 18 home runs and 29 doubles and drove in 89 runs for the Erie Seawolves.
Workman was the Tigers’ 29th-ranked prospect per MLB Pipeline. He made 74 starts at third base in 2024 and 47 at shortstop.

His addition gives the Cubs another left-handed hitting infielder off the bench. It gives the Cubs depth and allows them to rest some of their regular infielders throughout the year to both maximize platoon splits and keep their infielders fresher throughout the year.
Workman immediately is placed on the Cubs 40-man roster, which is now full.
