Cubs acquire lefty Sean Newcomb from Atlanta for Jesse Chavez

3 years agoAndy Martinez

Jed Hoyer and the Cubs made a move Wednesday night to bolster their left-handed pitching.

The Cubs acquired southpaw Sean Newcomb from the Atlanta Braves for righty Jesse Chavez and a cash consideration. Newcomb had been designated for assignment on Tuesday.

Newcomb has a career 4.25 ERA in 144 games across six seasons. He’ll give David Ross another left-handed option out of the bullpen. The Cubs currently only have Daniel Norris as a southpaw in the pen.

“I know he’s got electric stuff,” Ross said. “Old teammate of mine who had him in Atlanta for awhile, Brian McCann, raves about him and his stuff. I look forward to meeting him and see if we can get the most out of him.”

Chavez allowed 4 earned runs in 5.2 innings this season. He was signed to a minor league deal in Spring Training and broke camp with the team.
