Cubs trade pitcher Cody Poteet to Orioles for cash considerations

The Chicago Cubs pulled off a minor trade for a player they acquired in a major offseason swap.
The team announced they traded right-handed pitcher Cody Poteet to the Baltimore Orioles for cash considerations. The Cubs had acquired Poteet in a December deal that sent Cody Bellinger to the New York Yankees. Poteet had been designated for assignment on Thursday to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Brad Keller.
Poteet started the Cubs’ Cactus League opener in February against the Los Angeles Dodgers and had a 10.80 ERA in 2 appearances this spring. He allowed five hits and three walks with a strikeout in 3.1 innings of work.
The 30-year-old was a 2015 fourth-round pick by the Miami Marlins, appeared in 9 major-league games across 2021 and 2022 and then underwent Tommy John surgery in 2022 and missed the entire 2023 campaign. Poteet returned to the majors in 2024 with the Yankees, making five appearances, allowing 10 runs on 15 hits in 10 innings with four walks and nine strikeouts.
The Cubs traded away Bellinger to New York after acquiring Kyle Tucker from the Houston Astros in a blockbuster deal that sent Isaac Paredes, Hayden Wesneski and 2024 first-round pick Cam Smith the other way.

Tucker was brought in to serve as the middle-of-the-order, superstar bat the Cubs’ offense had been lacking. He was a Gold Glove winner in right field and Seiya Suzuki also manned the position, while carrying a no-trade clause in his contract. Bellinger had picked his player option for the 2025 season and has another player option for 2026, with $52.5 million remaining on the two years of his contract.
Bellinger had a home run and four RBI on Saturday as the Yankees hit a franchise-record nine home runs in their 20-9 win over the Brewers in New York.
