Chicago Sky sign Kahleah Copper to multi-year contract extension
The Chicago Sky announced on Sunday that they are signing the 2021 Finals MVP and 3-time All-Star Kahleah Copper to a multi-year contract extension, right at the WNBA deadline.
“This is where I’ve grown as a player, as a person, and where I’m proud to say I’ve become one with this community,” Copper said in a statement. “This city doesn’t cut corners and pours everything it has into each day. That’s a standard I’m proud to upkeep. I’m ready and excited to grow and build on my legacy here and give this city, our fans, my teammates, coaches, and the entire Sky organization everything I have to bring another championship back home.”
Per team policy, the details of the extension have not been released. This signing solidifies Copper’s place in Chicago to become the next franchise player. This also is a signal to free agents moving forward that the Sky want to continue to build around the guard.
“She has done a lot for this organization. I knew the first day she got in and I was there. I coached through all those years, and she fought for this situation so hard,” interim head coach Emre Vatansever said after the Connecticut game. “She was a big part of why we won the championship in 2021. She’s been doing an amazing job as a leader, as a player and well-deserved. This organization is very lucky to have her.”
Copper led the team this season with her career high 18.7 points per game average, ranking her in the top 10 scorers in the WNBA. She ranks in the top five in multiple Sky records over her 7-year Sky career.
