As an aside, this is a tough week across the league. So many players will walk away disappointed with their employment status, but this roster trimming is a necessary part of league operations. And, don’t forget that some of these cuts could come back on a 16-man practice squad in the coming days.

Enough preamble. Let’s get to it. Here are all the moves the Bears made to reach their 53-man roster:

Instant analysis: Releasing Rypien suggests that the Bears are going with just two quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, which allows for an extra body from another impacted position group. While Rypien was productive this season, Tyson Bagent is the clear No. 2 quarterback and an emergency QB can be housed and developed on the practice squad. As a vested veteran Rypien doesn’t have to pass through waivers and is free to sign with any team. This move was made despite the fact that the NFLPA vetoed a rule that a third QB can be elevated from the practice squad an unlimited number of times. Carrying a third quarterback can be excessive, and the Bears have too many quality candidates at other positions to use a roster spot on a passer who likely won’t play all year.
