Why Bears GM Ryan Poles believes 2025 NFL Draft will get ‘a little wild’

LAKE FOREST, Ill. — Zero trades have been made involving a 2025 NFL Draft first-round pick, and we’re just a few days from the event itself.

The pre-draft process has been relatively quiet, with it seeming certain the Tennessee Titans will pick quarterback Cam Ward No. 1, and then a lot of mystery after that.

Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles believes it could be a calm before the storm.

“I think this one’s going to be a little wild, but we’re going to be prepared for all the different scenarios that pop up,” Poles said Tuesday during his pre-draft press conference at Halas Hall. “The time working with (coach Ben Johnson) throughout this has been great, some really good communication, some great discussions as we set the board and get prepared for the draft.”

Poles believes we’ll see movement over the course of the first two days, with teams trying to make sure they add impact players.

“I think it’s deeper in certain areas than others,” Poles said. “Usually, the cutoff is a little bit quicker, I think, once you get into (Rounds) 2, 3. And this one is going to be a little bit different. So, I think there is going to be a lot more movement than there has been in the past.”

The Bears historically have been willing to deal, both before and during the NFL draft. The 2023 Bryce Young trade with the Carolina Panthers is the obvious one, and it brought the Bears a haul that still includes a 2025 second-round pick. The Bears have traded within the draft as well, so anything’s possible with this crew.

They want swings at the plate, too, so it seems likely they will make their picks at Nos. 10, 39 and 41.

Poles and assistant GM Ian Cunningham didn’t give anything away during the NFL-mandated pre-draft presser — why would they? — but they both look at this draft as an opportunity to make strides in their quest to upgrade this roster. But that doesn’t mean it will be a quiet process.

“It could get wild,” Cunningham said. “It could get wild. Sit back and watch. We have no feel right now. We’ll see.”
