Bears acquire DT Chris Williams in trade with Cleveland Browns

4 weeks agoScott Bair

Bears head coach Matt Eberflus voiced concern about his depth at defensive tackle earlier this week, especially with the injury to Zacch Pickens.

Those consternations were alleviated when the Bears acquired Chris Williams and a 2025 seventh-round pick from the Cleveland Browns for a 2025 sixth-round pick. The team announced the trade on Saturday morning.

The Bears had multiple sixth-round picks, and the selection used in this transaction was acquired from the Chase Claypool trade.

Williams has a history with Eberflus, having worked with him in Indianapolis. The 6-foot-3, 302-pound interior lineman played for the Colts from 2021-22, and spent 2023 on practice squads for the Chiefs and Browns.

Williams isn’t a top-shelf addition, but he should bolster depth in a thin position group.

Bears start trimming roster

Chicago is started to trim its roster before the Tuesday afternoon deadline to do so. They have placed receiver Nsimba Webster (groin), running back Ian Wheeler (knee) and defensive back Douglas Coleman III (neck) on injured reserve, according to multiple reports. Going on IR before making the 53-man roster makes them ineligible to return this season.

According to The Athletic, the Bears also release defensive linemen Tommy Sweeney and Keith Randolph.
