Chennedy Carter using Sky season to show she belongs

3 months agoKarli Bell

The Chicago Sky picked up Chennedy Carter off a training camp contract in February after not seeing WNBA action in 2023. As she’s progressed throughout the WNBA season, Carter has been a lightning rod of energy and speed off the bench.

Carter is second in the WNBA in bench points with a 12.5 average and fifth with her 2.5 assists average among reserves. She’s stepped into her role and has used this 2024 season as a way to prove to the W and their fans that she has a space in the league.

“I just want to show people that I belong,” Carter said on Media Day. “I want to show that maybe you read me a little bit wrong or maybe you got me misconstrued with someone else. For me personally, I just want to show people what I’m about. They know what I’m about on the court, but I want to give them a different side of me outside of basketball and open up to the fans, open up to the city and really get to know Chicago.”

Head coach Teresa Weatherspoon is also helping Carter get adjusted to being back in the league. Weatherspoon sees the spark that Carter brings with her leading scoring in the last two games, and while others may see her as a starter, Weatherspoon loves her being the 6th player off the bench.

“She’s the energy. You got to have energy coming off that bench, and the one thing about Chennedy that I love so much is she accepts her role,” Weatherspoon said after the Liberty loss on June 4.

“She’s just trying to follow that lead, and trying to do it the best way she possibly can. I’m thankful that people are starting to recognize how good she is defensively being so cat-quick, very difficult to post up. We’re pretty satisfied with where she is and what she’s accomplishing off the bench right now.”

Having Weatherspoon at the helm is giving Carter that extra boost and jolt through her own energy and passion that she has for the game of basketball.

“Sometimes her speaking, it gets me emotional. I really get emotional speaking to her because it’s so touching,” Carter said. “Because she’s so passionate about the game and she loves it, and it trickles down and sprinkles down onto all 12 players. Everyone feels it so Spoon really is the foundation of the Chicago Sky.”
