Breaking down how Caleb Williams, Bears can attack Colts’ Cover 3 defense

3 months agoTony Andracki

Can Caleb Williams and the Bears offense get back on track Sunday?

That will be one of the top storylines heading into the Week 3 game in Indianapolis.

The Bears can certainly help Williams out by getting their run game going and also with improved protection by the offensive line.

But for Williams to have success, he’ll need to pick apart the Cover 3 defense.

The Colts run Cover 3 coverage more than any other team in the NFL, as defensive coordinator Gus Bradley schemes his players up in that formation on 67% of the opponent’s dropbacks.

Williams has struggled so far in his brief career against Cover 3 but Marquee Sports Network analyst Tom Waddle broke down how the rookie quarterback could attack the defense on “Bear Essentials” Friday.

Waddle kept it simple, starting with a slant route from an outside receiver (most likely DJ Moore) paired with a flat route from D’Andre Swift out of the backfield to put the Colts outside linebacker on an island.

Another option Waddle proposed was sending a pair of receivers deep and then having a third receiver, tight end Cole Kmet and the running back flood the middle of the field.

“I think I’ve solved all the Bears’ passing problems,” Waddle said.
