What Cubs’ Ben Brown learned watching Zac Gallen pitch on Saturday

4 weeks agoZoe Grossman

In Saturday’s 6-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks, Cubs pitcher Ben Brown made his 12th MLB start. In the other dugout, the Arizona’s Zac Gallen made his 148th.

But the two pitchers’ respective experience didn’t exactly reflect on the box score.

Brown, who started shakily after giving up a leadoff home run to Corbin Carroll, settled in to throw four innings of one-run, three-hit ball while striking out six.

The Cubs’ ever-dangerous hitters got to Gallen early, collecting seven hits and scoring six runs in his six innings of work.

Brown, who threw exactly 100 pitches through four innings, expressed his admiration for Gallen’s efficiency in reaching that pitch count in two more innings despite giving up six runs.

“That’s really impressive, for him to battle,” Brown told reporters postgame. “He’s one of the best pitchers in baseball, he’s done great things and he’s going to continue to do great things. I think for me, I need a piece of that – just to continue to battle through.”

Saturday was the second time Cubs hitters faced Gallen this season, and the second time they got ahold of him easily. Gallen pitched just four innings and gave up four earned runs in the Cubs’ domestic Opening Day win on March 27.

Brown said the Cubs’ consistent run support is a testament to the talent up and down the lineup.

“Our guys have been doing an incredible job,” Brown said. “I do truly believe we have one of the most thorough offenses in baseball.”

Despite not stretching his start as long as he would have liked, Brown, who sports an 0.90 ERA in his last two starts, felt like Saturday was something good to build off of.

“Overall, I think I had some really good stuff today,” Brown said. “I battled, I’m pleased with the performance and I’m grateful that I was able to get through it.”
