Bears sign Devin Duvernay, former All-Pro return man
The Bears have shown a real commitment to the kicking game this offseason. They’ve retained some core special teams players for coordinator Richard Hightower.
Now they’ve added a former All-Pro return specialist to the crew. Kick and punter returner Devin Duvernay signed a one-year contract, the team announced on Wednesday afternoon.

He spent last season in Jacksonville and the previous for with Baltimore. He did some good work with the Ravans, with two Pro Bowl honors and an All-Pro selection in 2021. He led the NFL with 13.8 yards per punt return that season.
Duvernay has averaged 12 yards per return over his career. He has averaged 24.9 yards per kick return, with two taken to the house.
While Josh Blackwell can return, he’s also a good gunner and solid cover man. Duvernay makes the whole unit more dynamic and threatening in the kicking game.
The University of Texas product offers some value as a receiver as well. He has 105 career receptions for 977 yards and five touchdowns, averaging 9.3 yards per reception.
He signed a two-year deal with Jacksonville last season worth up to $8.5 million, but he was released earlier in March.
While the Bears went after big fish the past two weeks, they’ve made smart, smaller moves each day this week. Each one offers clarity and insight into the Bears’ grand plan, which is coming into focus.
The importance of special teams is clear, with coverage as valued as the specialists who get lots of the glory.
