Bears new head coach Ben Johnson is ‘more of a pitbull than people realize’
The Chicago Bears have their new head coach in Ben Johnson and formally introduced him on Wednesday to the media and the city.
While it remains to be seen what type of success he will have in Chicago, other coaches around the league know what the Bears are getting in their new leader.

“I received a text from a Detroit assistant coach Monday, and I was asking about Ben,” Carmen Vitali said on a recent episode of the Bears on the Marquee podcast. “He said, ‘Ben’s a lot more of a pitbull than people realize.’ He’s very direct. He’s very intense. When you look back at what Bears players said they wanted out of their next head coach, it was to what? Get rid of the gray area, have a guy that’s direct. Have a guy that’s black and white, someone that you can really get behind and someone that’s going to coach them hard and hold them accountable. That’s what Ben Johnson does. He rewards you for it, but he’s intense.
“That’s the type of fire you want to see when you’re overhauling an entire organization and you’re trying to instill a culture. What I really love about Ben Johnson is for as hard as we’ve heard that he can be on his players, he rewards in them in such a unique way because of the way that he evolves his offense.”
Johnson’s new quarterback in Caleb Williams saw it all year when the Bears lined up against the Detroit Lions, and he’s happy to have that fire on his sidelines.
“You can see the competitiveness in his eyes, the fire in his eyes,” Williams said. “It was really cool seeing that.”

It was shown early on when Johnson went out of his way to address the players in attendance at his introductory press conference, telling them to “get comfortable being uncomfortable.”
“The bar has been set higher than it’s ever been set before, and the only way for this team and for you as individual players to reach your potential is to be pushed and to be challenged,” Johnson said at his introductory press conference on Wednesday.
