NFL rumors: Bears want Cardinals OC Drew Petzing interview for head coach job

1 day agoTony Andracki

The Bears will be connected to plenty of head coaching candidates in the coming weeks as they look for a new leader.

There are obvious candidates, like Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson (arguably the hottest coaching candidate on the market) or Detroit defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn.

And then there are other names that fly below the radar a bit more — like Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Drew Petzing:

Petzing, who turns 38 in March, has spent the last two years as the OC for Kyler Murray and Co.

Murray was coming off a serious knee injury at the start of the 2023 campaign, but in 2024, he started every game and the offense finished in the top half of the league.

The Cardinals missed the playoffs at 8-9 in 2024, ranking 12th in points scored and 11th in yardage while averaging 23.5 points per game. They also were an elite rushing team, ranking seventh in the NFL in rushing yards and eighth in touchdowns on the ground.

Under Petzing, Murray posted the highest quarterback rating of his career (66.5).

Prior to his time with Arizona, Petzing spent three years with the Cleveland Browns as a tight ends and quarterbacks coach. He was with the Vikings from 2014 to 2019 as an assistant coach filling a variety of roles — offensive assistant, assistant wide receivers coach, assistant quarterbacks coach and eventually wide receivers coach.

He began his career as an intern with the Browns in 2013.

Petzing also worked at the collegiate level at Harvard, Boston College and Yale. He played at Middlebury College, where he was a defensive back.

In the NFL, he has worked under head coaches Jonathan Gannon, Kevin Stefanski, Mike Zimmer and Rob Chudzinski.
