A heckler gave Cubs catcher Christian Bethancourt extra motivation during epic rally
As if Christian Bethancourt needed any motivation when he stepped up to the plate, a fan provided extra oomph.
Leading by a run with 2 outs in the 9th, the Pirates intentionally walked Pete Crow-Armstrong to load the bases and bring up the Cubs backup catcher to the plate.
“Oh my God, I was like, ‘This is my moment to shine,’” Bethancourt told Taylor McGregor after the Cubs’ epic 14-10 win over the Pirates. “After the first pitch, someone behind me yelled, ‘You stink.’ I was like, ‘Oh my God, I’m not gonna stink right here.’
“I was like, ‘You gotta shine right here. You gotta put the ball in play and make things happen.’”
Boy, did he deliver.
Bethancourt laced a single just past shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa that drove in both the tying and go-ahead run in the win. It capped an improbable rally from a 10-3 deficit and put the cherry on top of Bethancourt’s 7-RBI day.

“By playing 27 outs,” Bethancourt said of the Cubs’ comeback. “We knew that we’ve been playing great. We’ve been hitting, we’ve been playing defense, we’ve been pitching. We know if we go out there, play 27 outs — even when we were down 10-3 at one point — we kept saying, ‘We gotta keep going. We gotta keep piling on.’
“That’s what we did.”

And it gave the Cubs their most impressive win of the season — and a much-needed victory, too. As the Cubs cling onto their slim playoff hopes, they need every win they can get — and Wednesday’s comeback was massive, as it keeps them within striking distance in the NL Wild Card race.
