A comprehensive look at the Cubs’ 2024 MLB trade deadline moves
The 2024 MLB trade deadline has passed and the Cubs roster looks a little different.
It’s not a drastic difference like we saw in 2021 – or even in 2022 when 4 relievers were traded away.
But Jed Hoyer’s front office was active throughout the period, making 3 separate deals.

Players in
3B Isaac Paredes
RHP Nate Pearson
RHP Jack Neely
IF Ben Cowles
Players out
3B/DH Christopher Morel
RHP Mark Leiter Jr.
RHP Hunter Bigge
RHP Ty Johnson
OF Yohendrick Piñango
IF Josh Rivera
Morel, Bigge and Johnson went to the Rays in exchange for Paredes. That move should improve the Cubs immediately as Paredes is a better defender at third base and has provided more consistency offensively than Morel to date.
Paredes – who was in the lineup for his Cubs debut Tuesday night – is a 25-year-old under team control through the 2027 season. So he will be a big part of the organization’s future.
“We wanted to make deals we felt like made sense for 2025 and beyond,” Hoyer said after the deadline had passed. “The goal wasn’t just accumulate assets. Going back to 2021, we took a lot of prospects that were far from the big leagues. That year, [Pete Crow-Armstrong] was injured in A-ball. Kevin Alcántara was in A-ball. So obviously, a very different strategy. And this year was very focused for next year and beyond.
“From that standpoint, we were really consistent with what we did. Obviously, the Parades-Morel deal and then getting Pearson. And we sent Leiter and the two prospects we got, one is in the upper minors and one’s in Triple-A. So I feel like guys are pretty close to the big leagues.”
Pearson was an interesting move, as the Cubs sent a pair of minor-league position players to the Blue Jays for the hard-throwing right-hander. Pearson is still only 27 and under team control through the 2026 season.

He was a 1st-round pick and a former Top 10 prospect in the entire game so the Cubs are hoping they can tap into that potential and help Pearson emerge as a key to the bullpen for the next 2-plus years.
Neely is the big get in the Leiter deal with the Yankees. The 24-year-old righty was ranked as the Yankees’ No. 22 prospect by MLB Pipeline and has had strong minor-league numbers as a reliever (2.75 ERA, 14.3 K/9).
Neely has only made 9 appearances in Triple-A this season in the Yankees system so he will still likely need some more seasoning before he impacts the Chicago bullpen.
Cowles is a 24-year-old who can play all over the infield and was hitting .295/.376/.472 (.848 OPS) with 9 homers and 14 stolen bases in Double-A at the time of the trade.
