Gary ‘Sarge’ Matthews remembers ‘Mr. Cub’ Ernie Banks
Gary “Sarge” Matthews is confident where Ernie Banks goes down in Cubs history.
“Without a doubt, he does go down as the greatest Cub. Period,” Matthews said on Marquee Sports Network. “[Ernie] had a way of hitting, could hit. It was hard to knock Ernie Banks.”
Matthews, who played parts of four seasons from 1984 to 1987 with the Cubs, remembered Banks and the legacy he had with the Chicago Cubs in a recent interview with Cole Wright, former Cub Doug Glanville and current Cub Jason Heyward.
The former outfielder also acknowledged the appreciation the 1969 and 1984 Cubs teams had for Heyward’s 2016 Cubs.
