‘The fans want more’: Cliff Floyd believes Cubs need to make changes

6 hours agoAndy Martinez

Cliff Floyd has donned a Cubs jersey. He’s played in the postseason with the Cubs. He knows what it means to have success in his hometown.

So he, like Craig Counsell and the Cubs, haven’t hid their frustration at the 2024 season that will end without a playoff appearance.

“You should be in the thick of these last 3 games like these other teams that aren’t better than you, like the D-Backs,” Floyd said on Friday’s episode of Cubs Live! “You might say the Padres might be a little bit better than you, but when you think about these teams that are vying for a chance to go to the postseason, you should be right in the thick of that.”

It echoes sentiments the Cubs manager shared during their last homestand — the organization “should be try to be building 90-win teams here.”

“A lot has to change because this is a big market that deserves to be out there playing against the best in the game,” Floyd said.

With 2 games remaining in the season, the Cubs look to be finishing eerily similar to the 2023 team that won 83 games and ended just a game out of the playoff picture. This time, though, they’ll finish no better than 4 games out of the playoff picture and at least 8 games out of the division race.

“The fans want more. … They gotta figure out how to get and give them more next season, because it’s something to be said about neighborhood baseball that you don’t see around the league — nowhere,” Floyd said. “This is special. Things have to change.”
