The Cubs are calling up one of their top prospects for final few games of 2024
One of the Cubs’ top prospects will get his first taste of the majors on Wednesday night.
The Cubs called up outfielder Kevin Alcántara before their series finale in Philadelphia. The Cubs optioned Miles Mastrobuoni to the Arizona Complex League to make room on the active roster.
Acquired in the Anthony Rizzo deal with the Yankees in 2021, the 22-year-old has been one of the more exciting prospects in the Cubs farm system for a while now. He is the 69th-ranked prospect in baseball and the Cubs’ 6th-best prospect, per MLB Pipeline.

The 6-foot, 6-inch outfielder had a stellar 2024 campaign, hitting 14 home runs and a .781 OPS in 111 games across Double-A and Triple-A. He was promoted to Triple-A — along with fellow top prospects Matt Shaw and James Triantos — in early August. In 35 games with Iowa, Alcántara is hitting .292/.378/.469 (.847 OPS) with 5 homers, 7 RBI and 22 RBI.
Alcántara was added to the 40-man roster after the 2022 season. In 2023, he hit 13 home runs and swiped 15 bags with a .284 batting average across 102 games at High-A and Double-A.
He gets the start in right field after Seiya Suzuki exited Tuesday night’s game with a sprained ankle running from first to home on Cody Bellinger’s 3-run triple in the 6th.
