Cubs top prospect suffers injury setback, likely done for season
The Cubs have a plethora of prospects ready to contribute at Triple-A.
Their top prospect, right-handed pitcher Cade Horton, won’t be one of them.
Horton suffered a setback in his recovery from a subscapular strain and will likely miss the rest of the season. The news was first reported by the Chicago Tribune.
The 22-year-old righty originally suffered the injury in May while with Iowa and was shut down for 3-4 weeks. He traveled to Arizona to begin his recovery and was playing catch when he suffered the setback.

Horton started the season in Tennessee and was dominant. He had a 1.10 ERA in 4 starts at Double-A and was promoted to Iowa in May. It was there that he experienced his first bit of struggles as a professional. In 5 starts at the Triple-A level, Horton had a 7.50 ERA in 18 innings.
Drafted in the 1st round of the 2022 draft, Horton was a fast riser through the Cubs’ system. He started his 2023 campaign with Low-A Myrtle Beach, was promoted to High-A after 4 starts and jumped to Double-A after 11 starts with South Bend.
There was a lot of hype surrounding Horton this season and there was belief he could even debut at the major-league level this season.
The Cubs’ 2021 1st-round pick, Jordan Wicks, followed a similar path in 2023 — he started the year in Double-A, was promoted to Iowa and finished the year in the big-league rotation. He started the 2024 campaign in the Cubs’ rotation, too.
But Horton’s path won’t be similar — and now the Cubs will work to have him return healthy in 2025.
