120 seconds: Talking nicknames with Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks
Kyle Hendricks was the recent guest on the ongoing “120 seconds” series before 1:20 games at Wrigley Field.
The veteran right-hander touched on a variety of topics with Jon “Boog” Sciambi this week, including his best round of golf ever (68, shot this spring), his top choice for college (Stanford – not Dartmouth, where he attended) and nicknames.
Hendricks is now known colloquially as “The Professor” but who gave him that nickname?
“It was a couple Latin players when I was a rookie,” Hendricks told Sciambi. “They called me Profesor, so that’s how it started and then the American guys picked up on it.”
If he was ever actually going to become a professor, what would he teach?
“Something math,” he said. “I was a big math guy.”
Hendricks also shared the story of the first time he met Ryan Dempster – after the trade that sent Dempster to the Rangers and brought Hendricks to Chicago. Plus, the funniest teammate he’s ever had and much more.
