‘It’s beautiful’: Cubs fan Bill Murray reacts to Ryne Sandberg statue

3 months agoTony Andracki

Sunday marked a momentous occasion for Cubs fans everywhere with Ryne Sandberg’s statue ceremony outside Wrigley Field.

Comedian, actor and famous Cubs fan Bill Murray was among those in attendance, enjoying the spectacle.

He got a special shoutout from Bob Costas, who was one of the guest speakers before Sandberg took the stage.

Costas – who was the broadcaster for “The Sandberg Game” 40 years ago – told a story about how he and Murray had a friend in common – broadcaster Ahmad Rashad. Since Murray was out of the country and unable to watch “The Sandberg Game” live, he was hoping to catch it on tape months after.

So Murray and Rashad showed up at Costas’ house to watch the game on VHS tape.

40 years later, Murray was on hand to see a franchise icon be honored.

“We’ve become friends over the years,” Murray said of Sandberg. “It’s a pretty amazing thing. It’s like the Presidential Medal of Freedom. You feel good when one of the good guys gets one. One of the guys that worked really hard.

“You feel like, OK, you’re supposed to get it. Someone’s supposed to make a real note of it. It’s beautiful. It’s a really nice statue. It’s great-looking.”

The 73-year-old Chicagoland native is the most prominent Cubs fan – his voice is heard before every home game at Wrigley Field narrating a video about the beauty and magic of “The Friendly Confines.”

Sandberg played more than 2,100 games for the Cubs and took over 9,200 plate appearances. Murray enjoyed watching every one of them.

“He was a very difficult out,” Murray said. “No matter how bad the game could be, if he came up, you felt like, ‘OK, this guy is not walking back to the dugout without expelling a lot of energy to get this done.’ I appreciate that – when people don’t want to fail.”
