Sky’s Diamond DeShields ‘grateful’ to be back on the court

6 months agoKarli Bell

The Chicago Sky brought 2021 WNBA Champion Diamond DeShields back on a one-year contract in February. As she continues to settle back into Chicago, DeShields is bringing a new sense of leadership both on and off the court for this young Sky team.

“I’m just trying to lead by example,” DeShields said at Media Day. “I’ve been dealt a pretty tough hand the past few years, but I’m more fortunate for it and I’m grateful. It’s given me an appreciation of just making the most of the present moment.

“If that’s one thing that I can leave my teammates with, I would be happy because then no matter what happens, we did our best in each and every moment. I honestly am just trying to live my life in a way that’s fulfilling to me, and if that inspires other people, then that’s what I’m here to do.”

DeShields didn’t play basketball for over 300 days due to a litany of injuries and medical emergencies she’s experienced dating back to 2020. Because of these experiences, she’s approaching this season back on the hardwood with a sense of gratitude.

“It makes you realize that any opportunity that you have to use your legs, use your body, use your mind is a gift that you have been given,” DeShields said. “You’re allowed to do these things today, but tomorrow it can change. I just carry that spirit with me each and every day because I’ve had those things taken away from me. But I’ve also had them given back, so it’s like what do you do now with the second chance?”
