Another Cub won’t be participating in next week’s All-Star Game.

Shortstop Dansby Swanson ruled himself out of the Midsummer Classic as he is recovering from a left heel contusion.

Swanson is not in the starting lineup for Friday night’s opener in New York against the Yankees. He suffered the injury on Wednesday, lunging for first base to beat out a double play.

“Just, obviously landed a little bit awkwardly,” Swanson said Thursday.

He sat out the finale in Milwaukee on Thursday. His status to pinch hit or come on as a defensive replacement is still undetermined. An IL stint isn’t ruled out either. If he lands on the IL, the Cubs can backdate it to Thursday and have him return next weekend at home against the Red Sox and only miss 6 games of action thanks to the break.

Swanson hasn’t had an IL stint since 2019 when he was on it for nearly a month with a right foot contusion. He missed just 2 games from 2020 through 2022.

“Getting treatment today. We’ll see how he feels after treatment. Feels a little bit better,” manager David Ross said. “Getting better every single day. He’ll get his treatment. If it feels like we can get out here and test it, we’ll try to do that or in the cage.

“Just get some moving around in the locker room, see how he feels and probably be a game-time decision. He’s day-to-day.”

In his stead, the Cubs will trot out a similar infield to Thursday. Like the finale in Milwaukee, Nico Hoerner will play shortstop, Christopher Morel is at second base and Patrick Wisdom starts at third. Trey Mancini is in for Jared Young at first against lefty starter Carlos Rodón.
