In advance of Tuesday’s doubleheader against the Cardinals at Wrigley Field, the Cubs made a slew of roster moves.

The team selected the contracts of right-handed pitchers Javier Assad and Nicholas Padilla from Triple-A Iowa, adding both to the 40-man roster. Assad will get the start in Game 1 while Padilla will serve as the 27th man for the doubleheader.

To make room for both on the roster, Jason Heyward was transferred to the 60-day IL and pitcher Kervin Castro was optioned to Triple-A.

Assad, 25, has been pitching well in the Cubs system this season with a 2.66 ERA and 1.24 WHIP in 23 games (21 starts) between Triple-A and Double-A.

Padilla, 25, has also excelled as a multi-inning reliever with a 2.30 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 57 strikeouts in 43 innings. He began the season with Advanced Class-A South Bend before jumping up to Double-A and he has spent the last month with Iowa.

The Cubs acquired Padilla in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 Draft in 2020. He was originally drafted in the 13th round by Tampa Bay in 2015 out of Grayson College in Texas.

Heyward hasn’t played since June 24 as he has dealt with a knee injury all season. Jed Hoyer announced earlier this month that the organization will move on from Heyward after this season.

Castro was claimed off waivers on Aug. 2 from the Giants and the 23-year-old righty had an 8.22 ERA in 7.2 innings with the Cubs this month.

Adrian Sampson is on track to start Game 2 of Tuesday’s doubleheader.
