Cubs activate Willson Contreras from IL, place Keegan Thompson on IL
Willson Contreras is back.
The Cubs activated Contreras on Saturday morning prior to their game against the Pirates. In a corresponding move, the Cubs placed Keegan Thompson on the 10-day IL with right shoulder inflammation, retroactive to Friday.
Contreras was placed on the 10-day IL on August 12 with a right knee sprain. Contreras joined Triple-A Iowa on a rehab assignment earlier in the week and had 2 home runs in 3 games. He has 17 home runs and 40 RBI this season and is sporting a .750 OPS this season.
Thompson rejoined the Cubs late in August after being stretched out to become a starter in Triple-A Iowa. He’s struggled in his debut in the rotation, posting a 10.57 ERA in his three big-league starts since he rejoined the team.
The Cubs are hopeful, though, that he can return to the pitcher he was when he started the year out of the Cubs bullpen and posted a 2.21 ERA in 27 appearances. He was strong when he was being stretched out in Iowa, posting a 0.00 ERA and a 0.68 WHIP in 4 starts at the Triple-A level.
